•If invited to a dinner, a lady or gentleman would have responded without delay.

•Responses to invitations would have been addressed to the lady of the house.

•Punctuality was of the utmost importance.

•As a general rule, the guests would have proceeded to the dining room following the order of precedence.

•Whilst dining customs changed throughout the century, some basic manners included eating with one’s mouth closed and not racing through one’s dinner.

•It was polite to pay a call or leave a card soon after the dinner.
